Caregiver Coaching: Common Questions
Is caregiver coaching the same as therapy?
While I am a clinical social worker, coaching is distinct from traditional therapy. It is focused on specific, practical clinical tools to manage the stressors and logistics of caregiving. If I determine that clinical therapy for a mental health diagnosis is more appropriate, I will discuss making that transition in our sessions.
Can we involve other family members?
Yes. Caregiving often involves complex family dynamics. I offer facilitation for family meetings to help members align on care goals, resolve role conflicts, and create a structured plan that supports the primary caregiver and the loved one.
What if my loved one is already in palliative care?
Coaching is highly effective during palliative transitions. My background in clinical social work allows me to provide accurately focused support for caregivers navigating the clinical and emotional nuances of life-limiting illnesses and end-of-life care planning.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions is determined by your current stress levels and the complexity of your caregiving situation. Some caregivers find clarity in 4-6 sessions, while others prefer ongoing support through a diagnosis transition. We will establish a rhythm that works for you.
